Horadric Arts Guide
The Horadric Arts Guide covers important Diablo II: Resurrected systems such as crafting, Horadric Cube recipes, item upgrades, sockets, breakpoints, and farming efficiency. Use it to understand the mechanics behind common decisions before applying them in the tools.
Crafting
Crafting uses the Horadric Cube to transform a magic base item (plus a rune, gem, and jewel) into a crafted item. Crafted items always carry a set of guaranteed bonuses based on the craft type, plus up to four additional random affixes — making crafting a way to create items that can have stats you can't find reliably on rares.
The key difference between a crafted item and a rare is the guaranteed bonus. A Blood Ring always has life leech. A Caster Amulet always has mana regeneration and mana. You're sacrificing the full randomness of a rare drop in exchange for that guaranteed foundation — and then hoping the random affixes roll well on top of it. The result is an item class that can occasionally be absolutely exceptional.
How Item Level Affects Crafted Output
The crafted item's output level (ilvl) determines which random affixes are eligible to roll. It's calculated from a combination of your character level (clvl) and the base item's level (ilvl): output = (clvl / 2) + (base ilvl / 2). This means a level 90 character crafting with a high-level base item can access the highest possible affix tiers — including maximum FCR, maximum Life, and maximum resist rolls. Lower-level characters or lower-level bases will be capped at lower random affix values, even with the same craft type.
Practical implication: if you want to craft a top-tier ring or amulet, use a max-clvl character and a magic base item that dropped in Hell. A base that dropped in Normal will have a low ilvl and artificially cap the potential affix quality — even if everything else is perfect.
Blood Craft
Perfect RubyLife, Life Leech, and Vitality
Best for melee builds and anyone wanting passive survivability. Life Stolen Per Hit is especially valuable on rings and amulets — it's a stat that's rare on jewellery and the Blood craft guarantees it. Combine with random FCR, Resistances, or Life for a strong overall item.
Caster Craft
Perfect AmethystMana, Mana Regeneration, and FCR
Targeted at spell-casting builds. The guaranteed mana and regen help with sustain, but Caster crafts are most valuable when random Faster Cast Rate (FCR) rolls on top of the guaranteed bonuses — giving you a ring or amulet that contributes to your FCR breakpoint while already providing mana support.
Hit Power Craft
Perfect SapphireOn-Hit Effects and Dexterity
The Frost Nova proc is a fixed effect — it doesn't roll a range. This craft type is primarily used for builds that want Dexterity or enjoy having a defensive proc. The guaranteed bonuses are modest on rings and amulets, so Hit Power crafts rely more on rolling strong random affixes to be competitive.
Safety Craft
Perfect EmeraldDamage Reduction and Resistances
Focused on pure survivability. Damage Reduced By is a rare stat — especially on jewellery — and Safety crafts guarantee it. Strong Safety rings or amulets can be excellent for hardcore players or builds that prioritize staying alive over maximizing damage or FCR.
Sunder Charms

Heralds are special unique enemies that spawn in a Terror Zone. In Terror Zones, killing any monster can cause a Herald to spawn and hunt the player. The chance increases with each monster killed in the same Terrorized Zone.
Heralds now have improved Latent Sunder Charm drop behavior. Their increased drop chance starts at Tier 1 instead of Tier 4, and the bonus is no longer reduced or scaled by player count, making solo drops better.
Higher-tier Heralds now give stronger drop bonuses:

Latent Sunder Charms can now drop from any monster, including both Terrorized and non-Terrorized monsters, and their drops are affected by Magic Find.
How the Output Rolls
Every Sunder Charm has 2 fixed rolls and 5 random affix slots:
- Affix 1: Monster [Element] Immunity is Sundered — the core sunder effect. This is a fixed property and has no numerical range displayed.
- Affix 2: [Element] Resistance penalty — a fixed negative resist penalty applied to you while carrying the charm (e.g. Fire Resistance: -70%). This is the trade-off cost of sundering immunities.
Each of the five remaining affix slots rolls one stat from a defined group of options. You cannot influence which option rolls — it is random each time you craft.
- Affix 3 — Offensive: Either [Element] Skill Damage % or Enemy [Element] Resistance reduction.
- Affix 4 — Treasure: Either Magic Find % or Extra Gold from Monsters %.
- Affix 5 — Resource: Either Life or Mana.
- Affix 6 — Utility: Faster Run/Walk %, Faster Hit Recovery %, or All Attributes.
- Affix 7 — Reduction: Either Magic Damage Reduced or Damage Reduced.
What Makes a Good Sunder Charm?
Since you're always paying the resistance penalty (Affix 2) and carrying the sunder effect (Affix 1), the quality difference between charms comes down to how the five random affixes land. Affix 3 is typically the most impactful for damage builds — rolling Enemy [Element] Resistance reduction is generally stronger than the skill damage variant, since it applies to all sources of that element. Affixes 4–7 are secondary utility. A charm that rolls Magic Find + Life + Faster Hit Recovery is broadly useful; one that rolls Extra Gold + Mana + Faster Run/Walk is not nearly as desirable.

Cube Recipes
The Horadric Cube is a multi-use alchemy tool that shows up early in the game and stays relevant forever. It has dozens of transmutation formulas — from upgrading gems and potions to adding sockets, rerolling items, and upgrading uniques to higher tiers. The Cube Recipes page has the full reference list.
Below are the most commonly used and practically important recipes, with context on when and why to use them.
Add Sockets to a Normal Weapon
This is one of the most important recipes for runeword crafters. If you find a great base — say, a Phase Blade or an eth Thresher — but it has no sockets, this recipe can socket it. However, the result is random. The Runeword Bases page tells you the socket range for your item's level; if you need a specific count (like exactly 6), Larzuk guarantees the max. Use this recipe when you'd be happy with any valid socket count, or when you want a lower count than Larzuk would give.
Add Sockets to a Normal Armor
Same principle as the weapon recipe — essential for runeword bases. A great example: finding a Dusk Shroud or an Archon Plate and wanting to socket it for Enigma or Fortitude. Check the Runeword Bases page first to confirm the item can reach the socket count you need before committing.
Upgrade Normal Unique → Exceptional
Useful for squeezing more out of a Normal unique you already have. A good example is upgrading Goblin Toe from Light Plated Boots to Battle Boots — you keep Goblin Toe's Crushing Blow and modifiers, but gain the stronger exceptional boot base. Defense-heavy items, boots, and helms benefit most since the base stat increase can matter. It does not turn one unique into another unique; it only upgrades the base item.
Upgrade Exceptional Unique → Elite
The big upgrade. Taking an Exceptional Duriel's Shell to its Elite version gives you a much higher defense base while keeping all the unique's affixes. The Str/Dex requirements go up, so make sure your character can equip the result. Very popular for staple mid-game uniques that you want to carry into endgame — War Traveler, Vampire Gaze, and similar.
Reroll a Rare Item
Useful when you have a rare item with a great base but terrible affixes. Perfect Skulls aren't cheap, so this is most worth it on high-ilvl bases like circlets or jewels that you want to gamble into better affixes. The full affix pool is re-rolled — you could get something great or something worse, so only do this on items you're already considering vendoring.
Upgrade Gem Quality
Perfect gems are required for many cube recipes and crafting. If you have leftover Chipped or Flawed gems from earlier in the game, cube them up rather than selling them — you'll need Perfect gems for socketing, upgrading, and crafting later. Particularly useful for stocking up on Perfect Skulls (needed for rerolling rares and high rune crafting) and Perfect Sapphires (Hit Power craft ingredient).
Upgrade Potion Size
This one is surprisingly useful early game. Belt rows unlock when the belt itself allows it — a normal belt only shows 1 row of potions, while an exceptional belt or better shows more. But upgrading small potions to Large or Full gives you significantly more healing per slot. A Full Rejuvenation Potion is one of the most valuable consumables in the game — 3 Rejuv Potions of any size cube into a larger one, and Full Rejuvs are worth saving for boss fights or PvP.
Breakpoints
Diablo II uses a frame-based engine running at 25 frames per second. Animation speeds — how fast you cast, how fast you recover from a hit, how fast you block — are all measured in frames. Because frames are discrete units, there are specific stat thresholds where adding more FCR (or FHR, or FBR) actually crosses into the next faster animation tier. Between those thresholds, adding more of the stat does literally nothing to your speed.
This is why gear planning in D2R involves checking breakpoints carefully. A ring that pushes you from 56% FCR to 62% FCR might cross a breakpoint and noticeably speed up your character — or it might do nothing if the next threshold is at 63%. Always check the Breakpoints page for your specific class before swapping gear.
How quickly your character casts spells. Diablo II's engine runs on frames (25 frames per second), and cast speed is measured in frames per cast. Reaching a breakpoint shaves off a frame — which is a meaningful real-world improvement. A Sorceress with 63% FCR casts at the same speed as one with 62% FCR because neither has crossed the next breakpoint. Get to exactly the next threshold or don't bother.
A Sorceress casting Frozen Orb goes from 13 frames at 0% FCR to 11 frames at 63% FCR, and 9 frames at 105% FCR — each jump is a real speed increase.
How quickly your character can act again after being hit. When you take enough damage (the 'stagger' threshold), your character enters a hit recovery animation and can't act for a number of frames. FHR reduces how long that animation lasts. Missing a FHR breakpoint means you're stuck in recovery longer than necessary, which is especially punishing in dense areas or PvP.
A Barbarian with 0% FHR takes 9 frames to recover from a hit. At 86% FHR, this drops to 5 frames. Getting hit a lot? Make sure you're at a meaningful breakpoint for your class.
How quickly your character recovers after blocking an attack. When your character blocks, they enter a blocking animation — and FBR reduces how long that takes. Most relevant for high-block builds like Paladins or Smiters. If you're not running a blocking build, this stat matters very little.
A Paladin with 0% FBR takes 5 frames to complete a block animation. At 86% FBR, this drops to 3 frames — a noticeable improvement when you're blocking constantly.
Movement speed. Unlike the other three stats, FRW does not have discrete frames-per-second breakpoints in the same strict sense. It scales more continuously, though there are soft diminishing returns at very high values. FRW is still important for farming efficiency — faster movement means faster runs, especially in large areas like Chaos Sanctuary or the Cow Level.
Enigma's Teleport bypasses FRW entirely for most characters, which is one of the reasons it's so valuable for farming. Without Teleport, FRW matters a lot more for routing and speed.
How to Use the Breakpoints Page
- →Select your class to see the FCR, FHR, FBR, and FRW tables for that specific class — breakpoints vary significantly between classes.
- →Check what breakpoint you're currently at with your gear, then look for the next threshold to target.
- →Use the information before swapping gear, not after — knowing the target in advance helps you pick up the right affixes when shopping or trading.
- →Remember that some breakpoints are class AND weapon speed dependent — a Sorceress with a fast weapon and one with a slow weapon can have different effective FCR thresholds.
